Current Issues in Numerical Relativity: Relativistic (Magneto-)Hydrodynamics in Dynamical Space-times
José M. Ibáñez
Dept. d'Astronomia i Astrofísica, Universitat de València
Date: Tuesday, April 28, 2009
Time: 12:00
Abstract:
The great majority of the most spectacular events in the sky detected by the current astronomical (earth or space-based) observatories involves matter evolving in presence of strong gravitational fields and/or reaching velocities near the speed of light. The stellar core collapse as a mechanism of hydrodynamical supernovae, the relativistic outflows released from collapsars or from the remnants of binary coalescing compact ob- jects as a models of formation of gamma-ray bursts, the relativistic jets associated to active galactic nuclei or microquasars, etc, are a few examples of these cosmic events. To deep into the knowledge of the physical nature of these energetic phenomena, modern Astrophysics is demanding the development of robust numerical multidimensional rela- tivistic hydro-codes coupled to a solver of Einstein equations. The main goal of this talk is to review the present status on the field of Numerical Relativity extended to the inclusion of matter fields, i.e., the Numerical Relativistic (Magneto-) Hydrodynamics in a dynami- cal space-time. I will summarize the present status of the effort in numerically solving the Einstein field equations, in presence of matter, and I will give a general overview about some of the many astrophysical applications.
